Hello Ladies! 

 

Ben Hull, the husband of our Sister Columbiette, Claire Hull, passed away this week.  The wake will be Thursday, April 21st (tomorrow) from 5:00-7:00pm at Leffler’s Funeral Home.  If you are available, please meet at 6:00pm at Leffler’s to attend as a group. 

 

Our sister Columbiette, Ann Leffler, is in need of checking up on while her son is on vacation.  Her cell phone number is ***-***-****.  Her address is ************ in Norwich.  ****** is a road off of North Wawecus Hill Road.  Please give her a call or visit, if you can. 

 

The date for the Ladies Tea has been set for Saturday, May 7th at 1:00pm in the Church Hall.  Please remember to sign up on the website or contact Kristi Surratt to sign up or ask questions.  The committee members are Traci Edwards, Jo Ann Rowley, Kristi Surratt, Cheryl Morin, Donna Coombs, and myself.   The Knights will be serving and cleaning up so we can enjoy the day.  We are very appreciative.  Jo Ann Rowley, Traci Edwards, Maryann Stradczuk, Madeline Illinger, Rosie Payne, Fr. Ted, Kathy Kral, Donna Coombs/Cheryl Morin, and Saturday Choir are sponsoring tables so far.  We could use four more, if you’re interested.  Table sponsors bring everything needed for the theme they choose – centerpiece, tablecloth, napkins, dinnerware, glasses, tea cups, etc, but it doesn’t have to be fancy.   Alex Kral and Renee Asmar have volunteered to greet our guests and explain the day’s events.   The Church Hall set up is scheduled for the night before (5/6) at 5:30pm.  Please help out, if you can!  I will be at the Columbiettes State Board meeting that night and can’t be there.  I will plan to set my table up Saturday morning around 10:00 and will have the hall open for others to set up.  We are also asking members to bring one dish of great food, nicely presented.  Bring whatever you like – appetizers, desserts, cookies, finger foods, muffins, quiche, pastries, candy  –  you name it!  Bring that recipe you’ve been wanting to try!  Food will be able to be brought Friday night or Saturday morning after 10:00.   We will have a prize for the most popular table, best hat, and a special drawing for those who sign up on the website.  We will have one more committee meeting before the event on Wednesday, April 27th at 6:00pm.  This will be at my house.    

 

If you are in need of the white name badges that help everyone know our names and identify us as Columbiettes, please contact Jo Ann Rowley.  The cost is around $15 and having badges helps us all.

 

Our next First Degree will be Sunday, June 5th at 2:00pm.  If you know someone who has been on the fence about joining, please ask her to join us!

 

Our Yard Sale is Saturday, June 4th (9:00-3:00).  As you start your Spring Cleaning, please consider donating your stuff to us!  Donations can be brought ahead of time and stored in the first floor storage at the Parish Center.  Contact Vicki Rosich if you need assistance.  Having the items ahead of time allows us to plan better and have enough tables for what we will be selling.  We are also offering tables for members who would like to sell their own stuff at $25/table. 

 

This year’s Major Degree Ceremony is going to be this Saturday, April 23rd in Monroe.  There are two levels of Columbiette membership – First Degree and Major Degree.  The Knights of Columbus have four degrees of membership.  The Major Degree Ceremony is really beautiful and builds on the information you heard in the First Degree.  While auxiliaries are permitted to perform our own First Degrees, State Council Columbiettes must have a Degree Team perform the Major Degree as it is much more elaborate.  If you are a First Degree member, please consider making your Major Degree.  Jo Ann Rowley and I are on the Major Degree Team and will be there to support you.  You’re welcome to ride with me.  At the very least it is a lovely day out with your Sister Columbiettes.  We really do have a ball and there’s no charge.  There is a pot luck lunch and we are usually back in time for the 4:00 mass.  Please let me know ASAP because State is anxious to have a count of candidates and attendees.

 

This year’s Columbiettes State Convention will be on June 11th.  There will be some familiar names on the ballot for State Board.  So far, Kristi Surratt, Debbie Shaffer, and Vicki Rosich have signed up to join me so far.  This is a spectacular and fun event that will be held this year in Stamford.  The cost to attend is $45 plus $10 registration fee.   Our auxiliary will pay the registration fee to attend.  The cost includes continental breakfast and four course lunch.   As in the past, we are bringing two baskets for raffle at the Convention – chocolate and scratch lottery tickets.  Please bring your donation to the next meeting.  Thankfully Ceil Roberge has agreed to put the baskets together (as she does them so well!).  If you’re busy like me, you can bring a couple of bucks and someone will shop for you.  Easy peasy!  If you are interested in taking a chance on the basket raffle at Convention, I have tickets.  They are 3 for $5 or 1 for $2.  Proceeds support CT State Columbiettes. 

 

Our Shoeboxes for the Homeless will be brought to the Convention in June.  Ceil Roberge, Jackie Connelly, and Patty Martinell are hoping to be able to make 90 of them for us.  They have plenty of shoe boxes, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.  They are looking to have more deodorant, socks, travel shampoo, travel conditioner, tissue packs, etc.  Think of what you would like to receive if you had virtually nothing. 

 

Our annual Election of Officers will be at the May meeting.  The nominating Committee has brought forward the following slate of officers:

·         President – Maryann Stradczuk

·         Vice President – Jo Ann Rowley

·         Financial Secretary – Cheryl Morin

·         Treasurer – Kathy Kral

·         Secretary – Donna Coombs

·         Sentinel – Vicki Rosich

Nominees can also be brought forward at the meeting before the vote.  If you are interested in running for any office, you can also let Kathy Brophy know.  You must be a Major Degree Member to run for office.  If you are a First Degree Member (the ceremony that we do here in the church), you can become a Major Degree member on April 23rd (see above).  It is such a pleasure to be an officer!  But the good of the order dictates that there be a regular turnover of positions.

 

Our 4th Annual Golf Tournament is Friday, August 12th.  Brochures are available.  Information and sign up are on our website.  If you have any friends who golf, please ask them if they can come out and support us!  We are also looking for prizes for our fabulous raffles.  If you regularly deal with a local business, maybe you could ask them to donate? 

 

The Supreme Council Columbiettes 58th Annual Convention is August 19-21 in Princeton, NJ.  Let me know if you would like to join me.  The cost for the weekend with double occupancy is $375.

We are being asked for information on our church and community activities by Supreme Columbiettes.  Jo Ann Rowley is responding to the survey, so please e-mail her privately if you are involved in any of the following:  Eucharistic Minister, CCD Teacher or Helper, lector, Altar Server, Parish Council, Finance Council, Emmaus Retreat, Advent Services, Lenten Services, Stations of the Cross, Divine Mercy, Liturgy, Prayer Line, State Memorial Mass Attendance, Steubenville East Youth, parade participation, Scout Leader, Food Pantry, Special Olympics, Little League/Soccer, nursing home visitation, volunteer fire department.  Feel free to list any other church or community projects you are involved in.  Please do not hit “reply all” for this so the group does not have their email boxes overrun by us.  Some members are sensitive to this.

 

Our next meeting is Monday, May 2nd at 7:00pm.  Social Hour begins at 6:00pm.  We will be back in the Church Hall.  See you there!
