Monthly Newsletter - August

Hello Ladies:

Due to the Labor Day holiday falling on our regular meeting night, we will move our monthly meeting and Social Hour to September 15th.

Once again our Golf Tournament was an amazing success!  Please join me in thanking and congratulating the hard working Golf Committee - Paula Nowakowski, Madeline Illinger, Rosie Payne, Dorla Barres, Karen Aubin, and Kathy Kral.  They worked throughout the year to procure sponsorships and golfers, and made countless decisions and preparations.  Thanks to all the members who worked the day of the tournament to have everything go so smoothly.  The Golf Tournament would also not have been possible without the support of everyone who donated prizes for raffle and talked to their golfing friends to see if they were interested.  We all played our part, and the result was that we had 53 golfers this year!  I don't have the numbers in yet, but we appear to have made a good profit.  To the committee, I'm sorry I was unable to thank you during my brief remarks at the luncheon.  The group was having such a good time that they couldn't even stay quiet for the blessing, and I was having a very difficult time being heard.  Everyone I talked with had a great time.  If you have a chance, take a look at all of the lovely pictures posted on our Facebook page by Renee.  While we're on the topic of Golf Tournament - if you see a poster still up, please pull it as a courtesy.  Thanks!

Our next big thing will be the Wine & Beer Tasting Party, which will be held at the Griswold Fish & Game Club on October 18th.  Kathy Luty, Sue Haulotte, Becky Jusseaume, Paula Nowakowski, and Kathy Brophy have volunteered to be on the committee.  Plans are well underway, and this should be a nice event.  Tickets will be available for sale soon.  Since this is a wine and beer event, it should have a wider appeal.

Fr. Ted has asked us to run a large scale raffle to benefit the general fund of the Parish.  To be clear, our Columbiettes group does not receive the proceeds of this raffle.  Because such a large effort will be required to sell tickets, we will be asking for assistance from other groups - Knights of Columbus, Parish Council, Finance Council - to help sell tickets.  Our committee (Cheryl Morin, Donna Coombs, Vicki Rosich, and Sue Haulotte) is making arrangements for ticket sales at various local locations, as well as at our own masses.  The prizes are simple - cash!!  ($1000, $500, $250, $100, $75, $50, $25)  The drawing will be held on November 1st at a Turkey Dinner.  The Turkey Dinner will benefit Columbiettes.  Yay!!  Tickets will be available soon. 

Already we are planning the Christmas Bazaar.  Please bring your good ideas to the September meeting!  At the Officers' Meeting we discussed the possibility of having games of skill.  The Christmas Bazaar is always such a fun event!  Already we have vendors signing up.  Speaking of Christmas - Rosie Payne and Terri Craig are hosting a Columbiettes Christmas Party.  Please put Wednesday, December 10th on your calendar for this fun and social event.

Lisa Lavado is planning a benefit Jewelry Party on Saturday, September 20th (2:00pm-4:00pm) in the Church Hall.  If you haven't seen Lisa's Creative Obsessions Jewelry, you're in for a treat.  Her designs and color combinations are stunning and fit any wardrobe or occasion.  Lisa is donating 20% of the total to Columbiettes.

Our Shoe Boxes for the Homeless collections have been so successful that Patty Martinell and Ceil Roberge have volunteered to gather and compile the donations.  Thanks, ladies!  The members and parishioners have been very generous and our upstairs storage room is really filling up!  This is turning out to be a very nice ministry.  Someone suggested we visit people in a local nursing home who have nobody who visits them.  Loneliness is such an awful thing and we can really make a difference by just listening!  Renee is checking with a local nursing home (Villa Maria and Village Manor are in Plainfield) to check on possible arrangements.  We will have more information on this exciting new ministry soon. I think we need a better name for it, if anyone has any suggestions.

The beautiful blue leather Columbiettes wallets (perfect for holding your travelling card) are available from State Columbiettes for $10.  There were a few left over from Convention.  When they are gone, that's it!  If you would like to purchase one, please let me know and I will check on availability for you.  The sooner the better!

Don't forget to put Sunday, September 7th on your calendar for the Tri-Parish Picnic.  More information is available in the Church Bulletin.

Our next First Degree will be held on Sunday, September 14th at 1:00pm in the Church Hall.  Note the date and time change.  Some of you met Glenda Marion at our last Social Hour.  She enjoyed her time with us so much that she is hoping her friend joins with her.  If any of your pewmates are interested in joining, the more the merrier!  And since we only run First Degree quarterly, now's the time.  If you speak with anyone who has questions, please feel free to give them my cell phone number or I can call them, if that works better.

I want to thank each and every one of you for what you do.  It may not seem like much (or maybe it does!), but together we do wonderful things for to support each other and our Parish.  I am proud that you have chosen me to be your President.  I hope you're having a sparkly Summer!  I sure am!
